About Us Newsletter Signup Payments for Pollution: How federal conservation programs can better benefit farmers and the environment In a new report, IATP finds that USDA's Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) pays for agricultural practices that are not environmentally beneficial and that, in some cases, actively make the environment worse. We identify 10 EQIP-supported practices that prop up high-emission or otherwise environmentally detrimental models of agriculture, and provide policy recommendations for removing industrial practices from EQIP and prioritizing agroecological practices. Read the report. We approach our work from a systems perspective. IATP is a think tank that understands the interconnection between agriculture, trade and climate. We analyze issue interdependence. We see how interrelationships between issues within complex societal structures make it challenging to effect change but also open powerful opportunities. We unpack power dynamics. We ask who has the power? Who wins and loses? Who is at the table when decisions are made? We identify key levers of change. We identify opportunities for big changes within trade, agriculture and climate policy. And we propose bold solutions that will bring us closer to our vision. What is systems thinking? IATP organizes our work into distinct, yet interconnected areas to facilitate research, build relationships through collaboration and effect policy change. Learn more about our focus areas.
