Brown, a reporter at The Washington Post, will discuss the history of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and the Red Summer of 1919, when a reign of racist terror massacres and lynchings swept more than 25 cities across the United States. The Red Summer of 1919 set the stage for the Tulsa Race Massacre, which historians call the single worst incident of racist violence committed against Black Americans in U.S. history. After Brown's story on the Tulsa Race Massacre was published on the front page of The Washington Post in 2018, the mayor of Tulsa announced the city would reopen an investigation into the search for mass graves that may contain bodies of Black people killed during the massacre. In 2020, scientists working on the investigation discovered a mass grave in the city's public cemetery.Share Your WorkShare your work at ISHI 33 by presenting a scientific poster. Abstracts considered for presentation should be on topics related to advances in the DNA typing process, policy updates and interesting case studies.All proposals will be selected based on perceived interest to the forensic community. Abstract proposals should be non-commercial and focused on educating forensic scientists on topics that will improve their technical, legal or policy knowledge.Deadline: July 24, 2022Submit Your AbstractCan you summarize your research in just three minutes? As a student or newly minted forensic scientist, you have limited opportunities to showcase your work before your peers and presenting at a scholarly conference can be daunting. This Threesis challenge is an opportunity to refine your thinking and hone your communication skills so that you can articulate the impact your research has on the field of DNA forensics. The competition also hopes to foster engagement and collaboration between individuals by promoting your research to a wider audience.Two winners will be selected based on the number of likes their videos have received. The first-place winner will receive a $500 cash prize and the opportunity to have a pizza party for their entire lab. The second-place winner will receive a $250 cash prize.
