To celebrate the centennial of his birth, JazzBoston, the Cambridge Community Center for the Arts (CCCA), and the Multicultural Arts Center (MAC), will present two HOT CLUB Listening Sessions. The program will be live and hybrid zoom. We invite you to join us live, and if you attend in person, bring your Mingus favorites in vinyl or CD format. The program will hosted by Bill Goldberg and Ben Young.Mingus was one of the most unique musicians in the 20th century, a virtuoso bassist, composer, band leader. His recording career spanned almost 4 decades with an early recording in 1943 with Louis Armstrong. It is no exaggeration to call Charles Mingus the greatest bass player in the history of Jazz; indeed, some might even regard it as understatement, for the hurricane power of his work as a composer, teacher, band leader, and iconoclast reacher far beyond Jazz to its heritage in the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. To this day his music is played by musicians all over the globe.The broadest concept for sessions such as these two is to listen to Jazz records. Listening all together strengthens understanding and community, and listening in person—with appropriate precautions—will keep the Jazz flame lit for all of us. These sessions inaugurate our bi-weekly “hot club”-style listening activity rooted in Cambridge, following in the footsteps of our successful February 21st pilot session, “Pres on Presidents’ Day”.This environment is designed to welcome curious beginners and long-time Jazz listeners. We’ll outline Charles Migus’ importance context of the greater arc of the music—but most of all we’re here to dig into the great sounds.
