Jeff Kaufman Posts RSS Contact May 11th, 2022 Ceiling Fan Air Filter Filtercubes are a great way to cheaply filter a lot of air, but they'rebulky and noisy. Elevating them can get themout of the way if you have a high enough ceiling, but it's still notideal. What if we built something around a device that is intended tobe up there: a ceiling fan?Let's say your blades are a foot from the ceiling, and sweep adiameter of 52". Shroud the fan with a regular octagon of 12"x24"furnace filters, and the air will flow in through the filters anddown: more... May 9th, 2022 Microphone on Electric Mandolin A large portion of what I'm doing when I play rhythm mandolin ispercussive: the sound of the pick hitting the strings. Afterlistening back to the comparison between my electricand acoustic mandolins, this is the thing I find most lacking inthe sound of the electric. What's interesting, however, is that Idon't really notice this when playing at home. I realized a few daysago that it's hearing the electric mandolin acoustically that makesthe difference, because the pickups are not really capturing thesepick sounds. And if I can hear it acoustically, I can fix it with amicrophone!I made some recordings, and I really like the sound I get when I mix alittle external microphone into the main sound from the pickup. I alsoreally like that this means when I run the pickups through distortionor a talkbox the crisp soundof the percussion is unaffected. more... May 7th, 2022 Experience on Meloxicam I continue to have wrist and hand issues, though they are mostly fineas long as I minimize how much I use them. Which mostly means a lotof dictation! Still, it would be good both to understand what iswrong with them and figure out how I can resume some of the activitiesI enjoy that I've stopped. On 2022-03-04 I started taking 15mg of Meloxicam, daily with dinner. This is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID), which often reducesarthritic swelling. I continued for a month, with my last dose on2022-04-04. Unlike when I tried Methotrexate, I didn'tnotice any changes either when I started or when I went off.To understand whether there might be a more subtle effect, I alsochecked my level of finger swelling each morning on waking by clasping myhands and seeing how tight it felt. I rated this feeling on a scaleof 1 to 10, and all days were in the range 6 to 9 inclusive: more... May 6th, 2022 Contra Dance Mask Policy After getting a questionin the BIDA Facebook group, I was curious what mask policies contradances are using. I looked at the dances marked as active on trycontra.com and checked theirwebsites for mask requirements (sheet).Of the 56 dances that have resumed, 31 (55%) require masks. Of those31:2 (6%) require surgical or better.4 (13%) require a surgical + cloth or better.4 (13%) require high-filtration masks (N95, KN95, KF94, etc)Now that high-filtration masks are widely available, it does seem likea weird compromise to require masking but allow low-filtration optionslike cloth or surgical, especially when I haven't seen anyone wearinga P100. Specifically: more... May 5th, 2022 Chording Bass When using my foot pedals to playbass, I've primarily been using them to specify the current chord.I'll play the same pedal on each downbeat, switching when the currentchord changes. There are a lot of things you can do with this, but ona real bass you'd normally play some things that are much morecomplex.Consider this traditional bass pattern:A bass note on every downbeat.Odd downbeats get the current chord.Even downbeats get either: If you are staying on the current chord, the fifth. If you are going to a new chord, a half step below the new chord. Here's an example on piano:Can we play this with just feet? more... May 1st, 2022 Shared Car: One Year In We've been sharing a car with a housemate for one year now. This hasworked really well. It's convenient being about to drive places, wecan leave the car seats in (though we keep a backup set in case weneed to go somewhere when the car is out), and it's less thinkingabout transportation. Neither we nor our housemate use the car thatoften, so it's rare that we both want to use it at the same time. Wedo have pretty different usage patterns, however:We have a larger number of shorter trips, while our housemate hasfewer longer trips: more...
