ArredondoReviewed in the United States on February 2, 20205.0 out of 5 starsWOW! Powerful Drama: Unique Story Brilliantly Executed, worthy of anyone's mindful&attentive viewingVerified purchaseNO SPOILERS REVIEW!WOW! This is quite a powerful gem of a movie here. Epic, deep, thoughtful, philosophical, emotional drama all the way.... no popcorn flick/superficial viewing here... not for the weak of stomach, or heart. You'll probably find a few cut onions in the room for those of you with dry eyes/inactive tear-duct glands.I can say this was a pretty unique movie: both in story/plot as well as in execution as all the acting was done brilliantly, and the script was well written and the story was really the thing in my opinion that shone the most but only because everything else was done well to support it and breathe it to a believable, engaging, gripping life and light of day. This is one of those you can rewatch because it is so rich, in the details and the contemplative questions it poses as well as the particulars of the story and connecting all the dots... as there are definitely a lot of moving parts and connections in this story. Not for you if you aren't willing to give any mental effort to follow the story (i.e. NOT a popcorn flick). But the reward is fat if you're down for the journey. I must say the pacing and the way what initially doesn't makes sense comes together as the story evolves and progresses is just perfect. In that it is not too mysterious or cryptic to be annoying or non-sensical, but it also doesn't give itself away quickly enough initially to not make you very curious and interested as to how it all ties in together, it's like it eggs you on just for the right amount of time to make you REALLY curious but then also satisfies your curiosity before it's dragged out too much...Man. I was really impacted by this film. It's quite brilliant and well done. And, if you're open or susceptible to suggestions via movies, then it might have you asking some new questions in your own life or re-evaulating your perspective on such.In synopsis: This movie is well-above-average on all accounts. It fires on all cylinders... script/writing, story, acting, casting, cinematography... It's a movie done with great excellence. Not to be missed. But only to be viewed WHEN you have the bandwidth to be emotionally engaged and taken through a full gammit of emotions, as well as intellectual/philosophical stimulation. Not for the casual viewing, nor the weak of stomach or heart. But this movie is definitely its own reward. I will probably rewatch this film (atypical for me)... it's that good!NOTE & CRITICISM - As others have, in part correctly criticized: there are some vulgar & intensely traumatic incidents in the movie... especially in the first half. Not to mention, the first minutes of the movie can seem disorienting and confusing. So, if you can't handle a little bit of swearing, then you might pull-out at the beginning. Also, there were some violent-event scenes/incidents that were pretty (really really quick yet) brutal. Yet I think they were kind of key to the story-telling i.e. it made you invested and emotionally intertwined in the story, my guess is that was the creator's/artist's intention. In any case, something to be aware of coming into the movie. There are only a few scenes and extremely short (literally probably a second or two each), but they are harsh. And the vulgar language was a little bit heavier in the first half of film with certain character's.So you have been forewarned.I'm not sure yet how critical I am of these elements though, perhaps I'll make a final judgment after reviewing. Again, because they have an impact on how vested you are in the story I think. Yet at the same time this story/movie is so frikkin brilliant that I think without the vulgarities and harsh scenes it would've been accessible to a much wider audiences (to younger people). However, at the same time, I'm not sure younger people can appreciate this story as much as a more mature person or someone who's lived a little more life could appreciate it.That being said, know that the tone of the film at the beginning is definitely not the tone throughout the whole movie... if you predict the movie by the first 20mins or so you'll think it's much darker than it actually is.4 people found this helpfulHelpfulReport abuseLuvts4evrReviewed in the United States on September 3, 20225.0 out of 5 starsKeep watchingVerified purchaseThere were times during the first 30 minutes or so I almost stopped watching. I'm glad I didn't. This movie begins to unfold like rose petals. The characters are well developed. The writing is excellent. Bob Dylan's lyrics and music are a perfect fit during both agonizing and celebratory moments in life. A beautiful picture not soon forgotten if ever.2 people found this helpfulHelpfulReport abuseKaylaReviewed in the United States on August 21, 20225.0 out of 5 starsMust watch until the endVerified purchaseLike many have said, yes there are some disturbing images in the beginning and tragic and traumatic events happen to these characters. But if you watch the film in it's entirety, you will be well rewarded with depth, intricacy, and philosophical genius. The interconnectedness of humanity is woven into every fiber and scene of this film. It's absolutely brilliant. I was completely bawling in the last scene, but in the best way. This film gave me so much hope. If you just continue a little longer, you'll find love.2 people found this helpfulHelpfulReport abuseliz Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 20225.0 out of 5 starsAmazing movieVerified purchaseYou won't regret watching this, perfect for a Friday night in !One person found this helpfulHelpfulReport abuseSGReviewed in the United States on August 21, 20225.0 out of 5 starsRarely write a reviewVerified purchaseI LOVE this movie, I can watch it a hundred times and it still is one of the best movies I have ever seen. IN ALL OF OUR STORIES.......My nephew Hank, 53, drove himself to the hospital (like always) and within 3 hrs he was dead.He had done things his way so many times but this time something went wrong. Something or someone was out of place. The doctors and nurses did not do or could not do ....what they did.My niece didn't cry at first; she was stunned. Then she had a thought and remembered that her brother has past away in October, her father passed away in March and her mother passed away the year before in May. She cried so hard because she realized that was her whole immediate family and that there was no one left but her.'''OUR CULTURE''' SAYS THIS IS THE TIME (OR A TIME) TO REMIND EACH OTHER THAT THIS IS LIFE. AND LIFE DOES WHAT LIFE DOES WITHOUT OUR READINESS OR OUR OPINION.MY NIECE WILL BE REMINDED THAT SHE IS TO BE STRONG, SUPER STRONG, AND ACCEPT THE DEATHS AND SHE MUST CARRY ON. SHE MUST BE STRONG. SHE HAS TO BE STRONG.*THIS IS ALL ABOUT '''LIFE ITSELF''.My niece is a legal executive. When her mother died she began to have thoughts that she was working too hard...because LIFE is short...so short. Then... when her father died she retired in her late 40s and she began to travel the world and she had a husband to go with her. His life had so many pangs and sufferings and lost too.My niece may end up going to a psychiatrist to deal with her emotions but the extended family will remind her again and again about THIS IS LIFE.... as the answer to what is wrong and as a solution for dealing with what is wrong. And everyone will say again about being strong and determined to carry-on...and not to wallow in grief because whatever is bad can go even worse. ''Love thy self''' and intend to conquer the extended family members will say. And give it some time. It takes time. It takes time to heal (???)....it takes time to create new visions, thoughts and memories. My niece reminded us that she doesn't have any kids, that her pregnancy ended when she was young and she decided not to do that again. She wants to throw that on the pile and suffer regret. But instead extended family members ask her to come by for dinner to meet kids. It's time to be AUNTIE. LOVE AND LAFFTER IS A GOOD ENOUGH STABILIZER.WE ALL HAVE A STORY. OUR LIFE IS A STORY. It does appear that if LIFE showed us our story before we lived it ...most of us might go bonkers. It would be too much.*THIS MOVIE REMINDS US ALL THAT ""LIFE ""IS REAL WHILE OUR ""LIVING"" IS A VISION AND A DREAM....DONE ON AN IDEALISTIC BASIS. IT IS THE IDEALISM (I THINK) THAT CAUSES US SO MUCH PAIN & CONFUSION.----margaret opine, cultural anthropology7 people found this helpfulHelpfulReport abuseGemReviewed in the United States on January 7, 20194.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyable, but unreliably predictableVerified purchaseRating: 3.5Disclaimer: This review contains some spoilers and pompous philosophizing. The movie does its theme of unreliability justice, because it is itself unreliable. As other reviewers have mentioned, it had a promising beginning, unexpected, subtly weaving in the unreliable narrator, but then it devolved into the clichéd and sappy happily-ever-after that can be wrapped up in a single lesson: life is unpredictable, but you can still make the most of it.The movie tricks us into thinking the ending will be unforeseeable, shocking, unlike anything we've seen before, but, instead, I got something that's reliably predictable. In this way, we can argue the film tries too hard to bring the unreliable narrative full circle: it makes us think something will be the case when it won't be. It portrays the characters themselves as unreliable, but you can deduce, by the hints dropped throughout, which will be the hero and which the "villain." The point of an unreliable narrative is that you don't start out knowing the narrative will, in fact, be unreliable. Because this is not the case here, it undercuts the effectiveness of the literary device.Anyway, I am rambling too much. Also, I disagree with the argument that life is unreliable. No, it's not. We imagine our ideal life, and strive to get it. We play it out in our heads, but we're just fooling ourselves. Many times we fail to figure into our equation potential setbacks. We fail to create backup plans. I mean, the film pretty much tells you that we'd know what to expect from our lives if life were not itself so unreliable in its design. No. Life is order. Life can't be unreliable, because it doesn't actually tell us how our life will unfold. We just assume it should be one way. Life doesn't tell us anything, but, if you believe in free will, rather allows us to become the authors of our own fates. We construct them as we go, and if we still find life to be unreliable, then it really just bespeaks our own unreliability--we project it onto life.Anyway, as I predicted halfway through the film, the characters not only cross paths, but the child who inadvertently caused the bus accident that killed the woman pregnant with the girl whom he'd later marry winds up meeting his future wife, some decades later, in the same spot where the accident took place. Seriously? Because that wasn't cheesy enough, someone had to die from cancer, a father walks out on his family, and, well, the beginning really is unexpected, so I won't spoil that. But, really, I don't think I've spoiled anything. After all, this is just a rehashing of the tragic multi-voiced star-crossed lovers/soulmate narrative with a hopeful message most of us are familiar with.Even so, I enjoyed the scenes filmed in Spanish and the mawkishness of it all. I'm a sucker for love stories, but there are only so many original love stories we can tell. Credit where credit is due: the final message is indeed uplifting and provides warmth on a cold winter night.I wouldn't say the film is a waste of time, and at least it kills boredom.HelpfulReport abuseSee all reviewsLink ArrowLink Arrow #navFooter{margin-top:0}window.ue_ibe = (window.ue_ibe || 0) + 1;if (window.ue_ibe === 1) {(function(e,c){function h(b,a){f.push([b,a])}function g(b,a){if(b){var c=e.head||e.getElementsByTagName("head")[0]||e.documentElement,d=e.createElement("script");d.async="async";d.src=b;d.setAttribute("crossorigin","anonymous");a&&a.onerror&&(d.onerror=a.onerror);a&&a.onload&&(d.onload=a.onload);c.insertBefore(d,c.firstChild)}}function k(){ue.uels=g;for(var b=0;b
