The Constitutional Convention has a deadline of July 4 to the present a new charter which will then be put to a referendum on September 4.The vote on Saturday could have broad implications for the future of mining in Chile and has the potential to change the ground rules for Chile’s giant copper mines and an industry that accounts for more than half of Chile's exports. Bloomberg writes that Saturday's vote will 'include articles that could severely restrict private ownership in mining. At stake are future investments in the world’s largest copper reserves that are crucial for supplying the clean energy transition.'May 05, 2022 04:17 PM GMTEM BulletPolitical RiskPolitical Risk BulletBulletEmerging MarketsPolitical Market NewsCHILE Borrell: EU Not Currently Discussing Ban On Russian Gas The EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has stated that the EU is not currently discussing a ban on Russian gas to follow the phased ban on Russian Oil. Borrell stressed that there are 'entire sectors of the European petrochemical industry that cannot work without gas.'The remarks seem to contradict comments the office of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this afternoon suggesting that a ban on Russian gas may be next on the agenda for the EU.Bloomberg: 'Germany expects the EU to turn its sights on Russian gas once a phased-in ban on Russian oil imports has been agreed, according to Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s top economic adviser.'Scholz adviser Joerg Kukies: We’ve reduced our dependence on Russian coal almost to zero. We are in the process as we speak of negotiating an embargo of Russian oil by the end of the year. “And what’s up next? 'If there is anyone in the Senate watching, you will see me and my Finnish counterpart walking the halls of Congress soon if we decide to join' .Olofsdotter stresses that the decision remains to be made but an ideal timeline would be before the senate goes on recess in August to diminish the time when Sweden is vulnerable before full membership.Yesterday Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and says that Blinken gave Sweden 'security assurances' on NATO membership. The speech was designed to outline 'the Administration’s policy toward the People’s Republic of China' and was expected to reaffirm containment of China as the primary focus of US foreign policy despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. Admiral Michael Gilday warned last week that the China is likely to be military and economically dominant in Asia-Pacific by 2027 and US military officials and lawmakers have voiced concern that the war in Ukraine may distract the administration from objectives in Asia, including the safeguarding of Taiwanese sovereignty. Gilday: 'They’ve [China] exceeded every deadline they’ve ever set for themselves. And so their deadline by 2050 really to be a global power by — it used to be 2035, and now it looks like 2027 to be regionally dominant militarily and economically.'Blinken's speech will now take place later in the month and will provide a framework for the Biden administration's strategy for China which is understood to have been developed in parallel to the delayed National Security Strategy.Pressing items in the strategy are understood to be the establishment of 'guardrails' to prevent a military escalation between the two powers, greater nuclear communication, and an agreement with China to curtail the flow of synthetic opioids.
