Unlike rockets, humans cannot be understood through inputs and outputs. Thus, our spacesuits need to be designed as well as they are engineered.Microgravity Technologies is a startup with a mission to advance human performance in space through 4D knit technology. We are developing AUTOMATED geometry-based kniT programming that will enable industrial knitting machines to be used as 4D printers. We study how different topological structures affect the mechanical properties of knitted materials and translate this into lightweight materials with advanced control over its functional properties.The idea for Microgravity Technologies started in 2017 during the development of ‘An optimal set of garments for prolonged stay in weightless environments’ - an MA project by Anna Talvi. Although existing knitting hardware can knit anything from metals to shape-memory materials and glass fiber, the state-of-art knitting software is very limited in possibilities to knit complex surface geometries and control its mechanical behaviour through stitch geometry.Anna Talvi is currently pursuing a PhD at UCL in partnership with the European Space Agency.
