At Naissance we source the very best that nature has to offer and as part of our continued growth, we are delighted to be settling into our new experience location at the beautiful Grade II* listed Glansevern Hall. Romantically positioned on the banks of the River Severn in Mid Wales, Glansevern Hall Gardens offer over 25 stunning acres of diverse landscape and exotic planting. The spectacular estate comprises a variety of garden attractions, such as a five acre lake, a cascading Water Garden, lakeside and woodland walks, the more formal Walled Garden, the charming Folly Garden and the secluded Bird Hide, set where the River Severn meets the River Rhiew.This fantastic location not only celebrates our proud Welsh heritage, but it is from here, surrounded by a rich variety of plants, that we take our inspiration for new ideas and products. Naissance will be growing some of its natural ingredients at Glansevern. The former Georgian Brew House is the new base for our formulators who work closely with our gardeners to bring the very best that nature has to offer, directly from the gardens and into the lab. Closer to the house is our walled garden, Wisteria fountain, a Georgian orangery and traditional long borders.THE GARDENSA bio-diverse selection of ancient trees, flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetablesHand-crafted Ginkgo Gates open the way to the original walled garden, bursting with flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables and from Spring to Autumn is a haven of colour and scent. The criss-crossing paths lined with flowers and herbs lead to follies and hidden corners where you will find everything from borders of lavender and trees laden with apples to the rich colours and aromas of calendula and roses.Discover the extraordinary Victorian Grotto and Rockery dating from around 1840. Continue through the Folly Garden and Wildflower Meadow (seasonal), down to the River Severn and the secluded, raised Bird Hide by the river’s edge. Discover the charming, cascading Water Garden, fed from the Montgomeryshire Canal, with Candelabra Primulas, Hostas and other water loving plants. The Lakeside Walk leads you past the Island and its Iron Gazebo, a haven for visiting waterfowl, which can include swans, geese, goosanders, pochard and, if you are lucky, our resident kingfishers.Closer to the house, the Formal Gardens offer a stunning, scented Wisteria Fountain Walk (seasonal), traditional long borders, peonies and the original Georgian Orangery.GINKGO AT GLANSEVERNGinkgo biloba, or maidenhair, is a tree native to China that has been grown for thousands of years for a variety of uses. Because it’s the only surviving member of an ancient order of plants, it’s sometimes referred to as a living fossil. While its leaves and seeds are often used in traditional Chinese medicine, modern research primarily focuses on ginkgo extract, which is made from the leaves. Ginkgo is associated with several health claims and uses, most of which focus on brain function and blood circulation.Given the heritage and importance of such a magnificent species of tree, that currently stands tall at Glansevern, and the beautiful Ginkgo gates in the courtyard, we took this as inspiration for our new Glansevern Hall Gardens branding. THE HISTORY OF GLANSEVERNGlansevern is steeped in over 200 years of botanical and architectural importanceGlansevern Hall and its surrounding buildings were built between the years of 1801 and 1806, for Arthur Davies Owen, a Welsh gentleman descended from Cadifor ap Daniwal, Lord of Castell Hywel. The hall is Grade II* listed, and was built under the architectural guidance of Joseph Bromfield of Shrewsbury, whose work is also seen at Rug near Corwen, Nannau near Dolgellau and Attingham Park in Shropshire. The building is of great historic and architectural importance: the main south front (five bays, broken by four Ionic pilasters which support a plain architrave) was compared with the Petit Trianon of Versailles by John Hilling in ‘The Historic Architecture of Wales’, while Richard Haslam (working with Nikolaus Pevsner, an esteemed scholar of the history of architecture) described Glansevern as “an austere Greek Revival house of Cefn stone”.In 1876 the estate passed through the female line to the Humphreys, who adopted the additional name of Owen and took up the Owen coat of arms. The Humphreys-Owen family were at Glansevern until 1951 when the property was sold. A succession of short-term owners followed.In 1982, Neville and Jenny Thomas bought the estate. By this time, the estate and hall had fallen into disrepair, and the Thomases worked incredibly hard over many years to restore it to a fully functioning estate. Their work in the gardens was particularly prolific, and so it was that they came to open their gardens up to the public in 1996. In 2015, the Thomas family retired and ownership of Glansevern passed to Caroline Owen and Richard Van Den Berg, who were committed to keeping the estate open for supporters far and wide to come and enjoy. Naissance purchased Glansevern in 2020, with its founder Jem Skelding passionate about writing a new chapter in the estate's legacy, not only as an inspiring experience location, but also as a sustainable and botanically-diverse source of ingredients. To the history of the gardens themselves, there is little record of the original layout, save that the Walled Garden is known to have been planned to its present dimensions in 1805. Its interior was entirely remodelled in 2001 to offer nine separate “rooms” including “The Roses” and “Fairytale”.
