The Foundation of Our Work BackgroundAddressing ACES, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, is a rising trend in public health, as more is becoming known about how childhood traumas, both at the individual and societal levels, have a devastating impact on health outcomes later in life, including greater instances of heart disease, cancer, and COPD, and a multitude of mental health issues. Schools, communities and practitioners in various systems are working to teach and reinforceresiliencyas well as combat the factors that lead to these traumatic events. Learn More HistoryIn 2016, a few child and education focused non-profits began meeting to collaborate around grant-writing efforts focused on 3rd grade reading outcomes. Following the First 2000 Days Summit screening of the filmResilience by Smart Start of New Hanover County in February 2018, the group gained momentum, expanding to include several other New Hanover County entities and systems, and focused its efforts on addressing social determinants of health as it related to ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences.) A grant was written by New Hanover Regional Medical Center in the spring of 2018 to fund an effort to create a blueprint, and with Communities in Schools as the fiscal agent, the effort was named the Resiliency Task Force (RTF). Learn more Needs AssessmentIn early 2019 a Community Needs Assessment was conducted by the Duke Center for Child and Family Health as part of the NC Trauma-Informed Communities Pilot Project. Over 200 community providers of services were surveyed, with the results of this survey guiding the Task Force’s creation of a strategic plan. Learn more Strategic PlanThe Resiliency Task Force worked together on a document to guide its work in the community. A living document, the group revisits this plan regularly to update and change as needs dictate. The Task Force uses the best available data to guide is planning decisions.
