We speak many languages and in many accents. We encompass myriad belief systems and personal values. We live in big cities and small towns and everywhere in between. What we all have in common is care of others. Some of us provide health care ourselves. Some of us support and love a physician in our family. Some do both. But all of us are invested in the greater good through the compassionate delivery of medical care to others. We’ve all heard conversations in recent years about diversity and racism, inclusion and equity. Some of those conversations have been loud. Some need to have been louder. This issue of Physician Family Magazine is devoted to raising the volume on a handful of conversations about those issues, how they impact our family of medicine and the families we love, what we’re doing right, and how we can all help to do better. In the following pages, we’ll learn to recognize and redirect bias and to develop better cultural competence among medical families. An extensive literature review about books focused on health and gender disparities, bias, sexism and racism provides additional resourcesA young physician tells us how he and Black Men in White Coats are working to increase the number of Black men in medicine and the former head of the AMA’s Minority Affairs Section shares how she has and continues to overcome bias-related obstacles in her medical journey. We’ll hear from an immigrant medical student about her family’s sacrifices to bring their family to America and learn more about how the Association of American Indian Physicians combines culture and medicine to better serve native Americans. There’s information about the AMA Foundation’s new LGBTQ+ Fellowship Program and a personal tale about how a physician mom in a same-sex marriage learned to joyously share her personal life with her patients.A dad married to a surgeon shares lessons he’s learned in his new and not-yet-common role as a stay-at-home father, while our food editor encourages all of us to embrace opportunities to learn about new cuisines and cultures from the physician families we encounter on our own Journey of Medicine. If you’re reading this issue online, thank you! But if you join our nationwide network of physician families in the AMA Alliance (amaalliance.org) as we celebrate 100 years of service and connection, you’ll get hard copies in the mail!We hope you enjoy this very special issue. We’d love to hear your physician family’s stories about diversity, inclusion and equity - and perhaps include some of them in our #PhysicianFamilyBlog in coming months.
