Published by %s July 14, 2022 From Michael Charles:DJ LeMahieu has won the Yankees many a game over the last four years with his stellar fielding and consistency at the plate. However, on his 34th birthday, LeMahieu gave the Yanks a boost with his legs en route to a 7-6 win in 10 innings over the Reds Wednesday night.Starting the bottom of the 10th as the automatic runner on second, LeMahieu was primed to be the winning run with the heart of the order coming up. Following an Aaron Judge strikeout and an intentional walk of Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton stepped into the box looking to send an exuberant Yankees crowd home happy — but he never got the chance. After Stanton fell behind in the count 0-2, Reds reliever Alexis Díaz bounced a slider allowing LeMahieu to get to third base. On the very next pitch, with Yankee Stadium still buzzing with anticipation, Díaz spiked another slider. LeMahieu immediately took off down the line, with fans roaring as he slid into home plate with the winning run before being mobbed by his teammates. Even a usually reserved LeMahieu couldn’t hold back a smile as he was showered with high fives and bubble gum.Very much like Yankees.com to not mention the major story of the game, which was Luis Severino leaving the game after his shoulder hurt, causing him to lose all of his velocity, which led to him allowing back-to-back-to-back home runs in the second, putting the Yankees in a 4-0 hole and looking like they were on the way to their fourth straight loss. Luckily, JP Sears stepped in and stopped the damage and allowed the Yankees to use an error to keep an inning alive and score five runs (four unearned) in the third. The Reds retook the lead off Sears (who did really well, just allowing the two runs) but Stanton tied it before the Yankees won it in the 10th.A night after melting down against the Reds, Clay Holmes came in and promptly got into trouble again in the ninth, walking the leadoff batter and allowing a hit, but the hit, to be frank, was a typical Holmes groundball that just landed in no man’s land, so it wasn’t as bad as it looked, although Holmes looked SHOOK. Rizzo even had to come over and calm him down at one point early in the inning. Yee-ikes. So anyhow, nice to win, but Sevy’s shoulder hurting (which likely means he’s going to have some sort of season-ending ailment) is a hard pill to swallow on a night the Yankees were otherwise happy. Yankees.com: Clay can’t close the door Published by %s Yankees.com continues their whiny, “If it’s a loss, we’re not putting up a game story until the next day” nonsense. Anyhow, that was such a bad loss that it honestly doesn’t really hurt as much as it should, since it was SO BAD that it was almost comical. After allowing two earned runs all season, Clay Holmes allowed FOUR runs in the ninth inning tonight as the Yankees blew a 3-0 lead to lose to the Reds in the ninth inning. The Reds are proving to be quite the clutch group of guys. They had some improbable wins over the Rays, as well, in sweeping them over the weekend. In any event, Holmes basically had nothing tonight, and Boone probably left him in a batter too long (bases loaded, no outs and a run in – almost any other closer would have been pulled by that point, which is why most closers rarely give up more than three runs, because they get pulled before it can happen), as he then hit his SECOND batter of the game to allow the second run of the inning. Wandy Peralta came in and got two ground balls where either one of them could have been a double play, but instead, neither of them were, and it was two outs, bases loaded and on an 0-2 pitch, Wandy changed his approach with Jonathan India and paid the price, giving up a two-run single. It was an awful loss, but if Holmes comes back strong in his next outing, I won’t be concerned and I’ll just attribute this to the occasional meltdown that even the best relief pitchers have sometimes. If he struggles in his next outing, though, I’ll be officially concerned that he has the yips or something. In any event, awful loss, but Gerrit Cole was excellent, Mike King was great and really, even Wandy played well. Aaron Hicks might be headed to the IL. If he does, I wonder if Florial will get a real chance to play some center field. Matt Carpenter better play the next five games. Read more... Yankees.com: Frustrated Yanks settle for split at Fenway Published by %s July 11, 2022 From Bryan Hoch:The splitter sailed inside to Giancarlo Stanton, who seemed to consider making an in-game tribute to Bo Jackson by shattering his bat across his right quadriceps. Instead, Aaron Boone took up the fight, raising six fingers from the top step of Fenway Park’s third-base dugout. That seventh-inning message — an open right palm and left thumb directed at home-plate umpire Tripp Gibson — was clear: one digit for every pitch the Yankees manager believed should have been a ball in that at-bat. Boone was tossed and watched the rest of Sunday night’s contest from the visitors’ clubhouse, an 11-6 Yankees loss to the Red Sox.“When you win the first two, you want to finish off with a great series,” Boone said as the Bombers absorbed their four-game split at Fenway. “They got behind again tonight and kept banging, and took advantage of some mistakes we made. So it’s a little frustrating in the moment.”Even before Boone was ejected for the fourth time this year (the third time during or after an at-bat involving Stanton or Aaron Judge), there were complaints. Still owning a comfortable first-place seat in the American League East, New York concluded a four-city, 10-game trip to Houston, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Boston with a 5-5 record that it felt should have been better.Jameson Taillon struggled for the fourth consecutive start, handing back a pair of four-run leads as he was knocked for six runs over five innings, including three homers. Taillon has permitted 20 earned runs over his last 21 innings, a stretch that includes matchups against winning clubs in the Red Sox and Astros, but also sub-.500 opponents in the A’s and Pirates.“I’m taking it on the chin right now,” Taillon said. “I’m in The Twilight Zone. I keep saying the same thing, and the same types of mistakes keep happening. It feels pretty bad. You get spotted a nice lead by the offense, they come out and attack. That should be pretty much a guaranteed win. I should go much deeper in the game.”Boone had a TERRIBLE series, but eh, you know what, this game really didn’t bother me as much as the third game. If anything, it made me more angry about the third game, because the way that Boone used King and Holmes in the third game meant that they were likely unavailable tonight and yet he still didn’t use Holmes against JD Martinez when that would have locked in the third win and then tonight’s game would have just been total house money. Boy, I still can’t get over how bad that decision was. I hope I will. I don’t want to be dwelling on that call a week from now, ya know? In any event, yeah, Boone did a bad job tonight, as well, but I’ll be frank, with the way that the bullpen was tonight, if they weren’t going to use JP Sears (and they apparently weren’t going to use JP Sears. My bet is that they plan on pushing everyone back this week and having Sears make a spot start, which is why he wasn’t available tonight), then while he absolutely should have still used a reliever to face JD Martinez with the score 6-4, this was bound to go poorly eventually. They really need Loaisiga back (hell, Lucas fucking Luetge would have even been appreciated). Taillon’s been awful, which is a problem, but they have time to work on that, so I’m not stressed about that. Again, I was expecting a loss tonight anyways due to the state of the bullpen (if it was a close game, eventually Chappy or Castro or Abreu WAS going to blow it), so it’s not a big deal. I would hope that the starters do a better job at home against the Red Sox. If they suck then, too, then okay, that’ll be more of a problem. It’s nice to see Matt Carpenter continue to play well, though! And congrats to Jose Trevino and Nestor Cortes on making the All-Star Game! That’s great news. SIX Yankees in the All-Star Game! That’s awesome. That’s really hard to do nowadays, unlike when Joe Torre would just stack the deck with Yankees, so that’s very impressive. Read more... Yankees (61-24) @ Red Sox (46-39), Sunday July 9, 2022, 7:08pm ET **Game Chatter** Published by %s July 10, 2022 Jameson Taillon (#50, 30, RHP, 9-2, 3.63) vs. Nick Pivetta (#37, 29, RHP, 8-6, 3.68) YANKEES2B DJ LeMahieu RRF Aaron Judge R1B A. Bogaerts RLF Alex Verdugo L2B Trevor Story R1B F. Cordero LRF J. Bradley L3B Bobby Dalbec RI won’t lie, last night still has me shook. I’m legit more upset about last night’s loss than I was about the no-hitter, as the no-hitter, whatever, Javier was dominant. Sometimes you get dominated by a good pitcher. Same with the Verlander loss that same series. Sometimes the other pitcher is really good and you lose. But to lose a game that would have been practically a guaranteed win had Boone simply gone to Clay Holmes a batter early against one of the two really good hitters in this Red Sox lineup? I just can’t wrap my head around that. Like, if you’re going to have King pitch to Martinez, why not just let him pitch to Bogie? It was just an absurd half-measure. He didn’t go for the win, but he didn’t NOT go for the win, either. It was just this middle sort of nonsense. Don’t get me wrong, blowing a two-run lead in the 10th due to terrible defense was annoying, too, because it was so slow and frustrating, but really, at the end of the day, it comes down to the Yankees having an almost guaranteed win by using Holmes against Martinez or…not. And Boone chose “not.” I just can’t comprehend that decision. I’d be shocked if they win this one after last night, but hey, at least they will still be up 14 games on the Red Sox. That’s nice. Read more... Yankees.com: Yankees Fall to Rivals in Extras Published by %s Yankees.com now doesn’t even BOTHER with write-ups for late losses any more. This is such nonsense. Speaking of “just nonsense,” you know what I’m going to say. If Aaron Boone brings in Clay Holmes to face J.D. Martinez with two outs and nobody on in the eighth inning, after Mike King had already pitched TWO innings at that point (a third of an inning in the sixth, the entire seventh and then the first two outs in the eighth), what are the odds that the Yankees win the game? 95%? Higher? Clay Holmes is amazing, but there isn’t a pitcher in the history of baseball, Mariano Rivera included, who I would say “He’ll never give up a single before getting an out.” So the key is to not bring Holmes into the game in situations where a single kills you. If Holmes is available (and he was obviously available), then you bring him in to face JD Martinez and see if Holmes can get one out before Martinez, Boagarts and Verdugo all hit singles, which is the only way they were going to score off of Holmes. Instead, Holmes entered the game with the tying run a single away and due to the shift, the Yankees gave up that single (and Hicks made a bad play on the ball, too, double-clutching on the throw home). Think about that – Holmes didn’t even give up awful contact. It was just hit where they weren’t. As any Breaking Bad fans knows, half measures are the worst. If Boone didn’t want to play for the win tonight, then fine, use Wandy Peralta in the sixth and the seventh and King in the eighth. But he DID go for the win and yet…decided NOT to go for the win when he left King in to face Martinez. It’s either go all the way or DON’T go all the way. You don’t do a fucking half measure like Boone did.I really don’t care about the loss in a vacuum. Whatever, the Yankees are up 15 games on these guys, they’re guaranteed to leave Fenway up at least 14 games in the middle of freakin’ JULY. So I’m not worried about the loss in a vacuum, but in the specific situation, it was just such awful managing that it still makes me so mad. At least Monty pitched well, and Matt Carpenter continues to be awesome. Still, somehow, your first place New York Yankees. Read more... Yankees.com: ‘On a mission,’ Yankees thump Sox at Fenway Published by %s From Bryan Hoch:The challenge that prompted widespread soul-searching in how the Yankees approach on-field operations was made here at Fenway Park last October, when Aaron Boone announced in a pin-drop silent visiting clubhouse that the American League had “closed the gap on us.”The manager’s candid remarks came in the wake of an AL Wild Card Game loss to the Red Sox. Some 275 days later, Boone proudly proclaims that his team is “better in every way” than last year’s vanquished squad. They’ve proved it over the past two nights, routing the Red Sox, 12-5, on Friday evening.“It just shows you how talented this clubhouse is, the players we’ve got in here, and what we’re able to accomplish,” Matt Carpenter said. “This is a really good division. To have the lead that we do is a testament to the guys in this room.”Josh Donaldson and Carpenter homered to highlight the offensive attack as the Yankees prevailed in an old-fashioned Fenway slugfest, picking up their third consecutive victory as their lead in the American League East swelled to an impressive 15 1/2 games over the second-place Rays. Now, don’t get me wrong, we should all be happy that the Yankees have guaranteed a split of this series (and guaranteed that the Red Sox will have not yet won a single series against an AL East opponent this season), and the fact that their lead in the AL East is now 15.5 games is also truly awesome. And that they scored 12 runs while Aaron Judge didn’t get a single hit is also really cool. And that they have now forced the other team to use a position player to pitch in two out of the last three games is also really cool. However, come on, there are clearly some glaring problems with the team right now, too. Taillon has been terrible his last few games. Nestor can’t pitch against the Red Sox (I’ve always been concerned about how his stuff plays against the Red Sox and it continues to be a major problem, as I think he has, like, a 9 ERA against the Sox) and Cole can’t seem to pitch against them, either (an over 5 ERA against the Sox since he joined the Yankees, including an embarrassing performance in the AL Wild Card Game last year. Granted, he was pitching hurt since the Yankees are morons, but still). Meanwhile, the Red Sox threw two rookies against the Yankees. If the Red Sox were healthy and, say, Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock started these last two games, the Yankees very well could have lost both games, like 5-4 and 5-3.Is it something to be too worried about? No, of course not. The Yankees still have an INSANE run differential on the season. At the same time, it really would be nice to see them get some better performances from their starters heading into the All-Star break (and also, you can see why Cash is still looking to pick up a starter this year, especially since Cortes and Sevy probably have some innings limit issues). With the doom and gloom out of the way, let us still appreciate how awesome it was to kick the Red Sox’s butts these last two games and open up a 15.5 game lead in the division.Once again, somehow, your first place New York Yankees.
