Spooky Daily#costumeA Century of Halloween CostumesHalloween costumes have come a long way since the early 20th century. Back then, most costumes were homemade, and therefore really creepy, depending on one's talent. But they were supposed to be scary, right? Or at least ridiculous. Later Halloween became an excuse to dress up and show off. As mass marketing got into the game, costumes became more varied, but also more bland. Then Hollywood saw Halloween costumes as a marketing scheme to promote movies and TV series. Somewhere along the way, Halloween became an excuse for an adult party, in which you could dress up as sexy as you want, because it's a costume, right? Glamour magazine made a video photoshoot of Halloween costumes to highlight the more popular costumes of each decade from the 1920s to the 21st century.#costume #fashion #history #cocktailBloody Shirley Temples for the KidsHere's a delicious Halloween party cocktail for kids that's super simple to prepare, but really impressive to children. The Bloody Shirley Temple is both a beverage and a party activity! A "Shirley Temple" is a non-alcoholic drink for children dressed up with cherries and umbrellas and such to resemble a fancy cocktail. You can make them any way you like, but they often contain grenadine syrup for color and sugar. For the Bloody Shirley Temples, you don't mix the grenadine into the drink- that's the child's job. The drink is just Sprite or 7Up in a glass. The garnish is a plastic syringe filled with blood, er, grenadine, which shows up nicely in the clear drink. The kids get to add the "blood" to the drink, but keep in mind they may want to squirt it at each other! #historyA Cockeyed Look at Halloween in the FutureAncient history is often hard to understand, because we've lost so much context. Figuring out what really happened from scarce and deteriorated artifacts comes with a good possibility of getting the story all wrong. We make jokes about the future, in which archaeologists unearth artifacts from the 21st century and totally misread what was going on. What misconceptions will future generations have about Halloween? #draculaDracula Daily Unfolds the Novel in Real TimeHere's a fun way to digest an entire novel one bite at a time, and "bite" is the operative word when you are reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. The novel begins with Jonathon Harker's first diary entry on May 3, so that's the first bite, beginning today.Bram Stoker’s Dracula is an epistolary novel - it’s made up of letters, diaries, telegrams, newspaper clippings - and every part of it has a date. The whole story happens between May 3 and November 10. So: Dracula Daily will post a newsletter each day that something happens to the characters, in the same timeline that it happens to them. You can read those entries online at Dracula Daily, in case you join in after May 3 and need to catch up. Just keep in mind that it's in blog order, meaning you'll have to scroll back to the May 3rd entry, and then read each post above it. Once you're caught up,you can subscribe to have each entry mailed to you daily, so you don't forget and miss an entry. Reading Dracula in this manner will keep you engaged through November, just the amount of time the original story took place! -via Metafilter #Dracula #BramStoker #readalong#foodZombie Brains Jello Shots Oooh, here's a perfect treat for an adult Halloween party- jello shots in the shape of brains! This "cocktail" involves quite a bit of preparation, so get started early and don't drink until your shots are set. Yes, it takes some work, but when your guests see what you see in the picture above, it will all be worth it. The outside of the "brain" is a mixture of gelatin, vodka and flavored liqueurs, and sweetened condensed milk to give it an opaque look. Inside the brain is a sweet liquid concoction of raspberries, liqueur, and sugar. Once the jello shots are set, you bring them out with as much ceremony as you like, and cut into them to reveal the inner raspberry blood. Using a surgical instrument is preferred. If anyone gets the heebie-jeebies, just let them know how sweet these shots are. You'll find the recipe and complete instructions at WikiHow.And since you now have a brain mold, why not try some Cake Ball Brains for dessert? #jelloshot #food #brain #alcohol#concertLast Words Legacy Project is a Cemetery Concert Series to Help People HealConcerts are usually held to entertain, this one aims differently. The Last Words Legacy concert series takes place in many different cemeteries and they are held to help people heal. Through songs, the musical event hopes to foster communications about death, dying, and grief. It’s not all doom and gloom music that will be played here, though. The organizers say that the concerts will have a variety of music, from wistful to joyful. It’s just like our own range of emotions, they vary and they are all valid. The organizers want audiences to experience them all.The event is poised to be an intimate and personal affair. Some of the original songs performed in The Last Words Legacy Project were inspired by letters sent to the band by people who had lost someone in their life.Further reading: Bringing Comfort at the End at Portland Tribune, Last Words Legacy Project / FacebookImage: Jonathan Villagomez#concert #cemetery #TheLastWordsLegacy #deathPrivacy & Cookie PolicyDMCA PolicyWebsite Accessibility Statement
