Its role is particularly important since it is the most traded food crop. Therefore, major disruptions in wheat production and supply have global impacts. The war in Ukraine is not only devastating for that country but has serious implications for food security around the world as Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat accounting for almost 10% of traded wheat and disruption in this supply will be felt around the world.Wheat is a global crop and maintaining adequate supply and distribution has faced many challenges imposed by nature, including heat, droughts, floods, the impact of climate change. Now we must add a human induced disaster to our list of challenges. The wheat research community is a highly collaborative international community working together to help ensure the stability of the global supply of wheat and reduce the risk of hunger and starvation in countries heavily dependent on imports. The Wheat Initiative will continue to support wheat researchers, breeders, and producers around the world to build a better future for all. We hope all our colleagues in Ukraine can stay safe and continue their important work.
