MyersDailyThou wilt shew me the path of life:in thy presence is fulness of joy;at thy right hand there are pleasuresfor evermore.Psalms 16:11/\^/\MyersDailyThursday, April 28, 2022Athletics needs less people who care about sports and more people who care about people.I remember one time when, after four years of the hardest work, an incredible team made it through an undefeated conference season, then made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament, only to lose by the barest of margins.When it was all over, the response from this team's athletic department was nothing but a detestable swear word.That was it.The leaders cared so much about sports that they forgot about the athletes.It wasn't me whose entire lifetime of focus and passion had been discarded with a swear word, rejected as a failure, merely because a play that could have gone either way happened to go the way of the other team.And yet even for me, nothing in sports until today has traumatized me more than that experience, and I was only a witness of it, not the target.But for every one of those athletes it was truly personal.They each had their entire lives, entire college careers, entire hopes and dreams, all of their identities thrown below the level of the trash by being discarded and defined by the blasphemy of a swear word.That was when they realized their lives meant less than a game to the world of sports that they thought that they loved.This would be enough to drive anyone to despair.Those kinds of people do not belong in sports.The mental and spiritual health of athletes is so important.Athletics needs less people who care about sports and more people who care about people.
